How Builderdex tests

Every comparison is scored against the same public rubric. Here is exactly how we evaluate builders and keep the rankings current.

One rubric, applied identically

Every builder gets the same brief and the same weighted criteria. Scores are 0–5 per criterion, weighted for the use-case, then normalized — no tool benefits from a favorable setup.

Refreshed monthly

Pricing is re-checked against vendor pages and capability columns are re-tested in internal deploy runs every month, because this category moves fast.

No paid placement

We do not accept vendor sponsorship for ranking position. Where a recommendation splits by user profile, that is because no single tool wins every criterion.

What we score

Each comparison runs every builder against these six criteria, then publishes the weighted result as a single big table at the top of the page.

  • Pricing transparency

We record the lowest paid tier that unlocks a custom domain or meaningful build limits, and model the cost of running a small portfolio rather than a single project.

  • Deploy target & code ownership

Does the builder emit real, portable code (and which framework), or publish only to a proprietary runtime? Exportable output scores higher than lock-in.

  • API / MCP automation

We check for a documented REST/GraphQL API and, increasingly, a Model Context Protocol surface that lets agents generate pages, update records and route data programmatically.

  • Backend included

Whether auth and a database are built in or tightly integrated, versus bring-your-own — decisive for anyone shipping a functional rather than purely visual build.

  • Agency & whitelabel

Can a freelancer or agency rebrand the tool, manage multiple client workspaces and transfer billing? Full whitelabel scores above seat-based sharing.

  • Support & documentation

Response channels, depth of docs and community size — the difference between a tool you can adopt this week and one you fight for a month.

Corrections & vendor data

Pricing, tiers and capabilities change constantly. If a comparison is out of date or a column is wrong, send the correction and we will re-verify against the vendor's own pages. Contact the editorial team.
